Stainless steel seamless pipe in the production and use of the process may encounter problems

Publish Time: 2025-03-20     Origin: Site

Introductory

--Seamless stainless steel pipes are widely used in chemical, energy, medical and other fields because of their corrosion resistance and high strength. However, in the actual production and use, the material is not up to standard, process defects and other problems may lead to pipe leakage, life shortening and even safety accidents. This article will analyze the causes of common problems of stainless steel pipe from the production source to the use of scenarios, and explain how to avoid risks through scientific material selection and standardized operation, to help buyers quickly identify quality products.

I. “Invisible traps” in the production chain

1. Defects in raw materials: impurities and compositional deviations

Problem manifestation: the surface of the steel pipe has sand holes, cracks, or localized rapid rust after use.

  • Root cause:

Some manufacturers in order to reduce costs, the use of recycled scrap steel or non-standard materials (such as 201 steel pretending to be 304), resulting in insufficient chromium and nickel content (for example, the 304 requirements of nickel ≥ 8%, inferior materials may be only 5%).

Smelting deoxidation is not complete, internal residual sulfur, phosphorus and other impurities, reducing corrosion resistance.

  •  How to avoid:

Ask the supplier to provide a third-party material report (e.g. SGS testing), focusing on whether the Cr (chromium), Ni (nickel) and Mo (molybdenum) content is up to standard.

2. Process defects: the “hardness” of cold drawing and hot rolling

  • Cold drawing process issues:

Drawing speed is too fast or insufficient lubrication, resulting in scratches on the inner wall and uneven wall thickness (deviation >10%).No annealing treatment, steel pipe residual internal stress, easy to deform after installation.

  • Hot rolling process problems:

Improper control of rolling temperature (e.g., below 1100°C), coarse grains and reduced toughness.

  • How to recognize:

Observe the end face of the steel pipe: high-quality pipe cut flat, poor quality pipe may have burrs or oval degree exceeds the standard.Measure the wall thickness: randomly select 3 points to measure, the thickness difference >5% belongs to substandard products.

3. Detection omissions: Surface passes, but mines inside

  • Typical Problems:

Only do water pressure test, ignore internal porosity, inclusions (not visible to the naked eye, but will reduce the pressure capacity).Intergranular corrosion test is not done, and the pipe is prone to cracking in welding or acidic environments.

  •  How to solve:

Require suppliers to provide ultrasonic flaw detection report (can detect internal defects ≥ 0.5mm).We carry out “triple inspection”: eddy current initial screening → ultrasonic fine inspection → 30MPa water pressure test to ensure zero defects out of the factory.

II. Common risks in the utilization chain

1. Environmental corrosion: the cost of improper material selection

  • Case: a chemical plant selection of 304 steel pipe conveying chlorine-containing media, the use of 6 months after the weld corrosion of large areas.

  • Reason analysis: 304 steel corrosion resistance to chlorine ions weak, chlorine content > 50ppm need to use 316L material.

  • Our program:

Recommend the best material according to the concentration of chlorine ions, pH value, and provide free advice on the suitability of the medium (such as molybdenum-containing 317L steel for highly chlorinated environments).

2. Improper installation: human damage and hidden danger

  • Wrong operation:

Cutting steel pipe with flame, resulting in localized carbonization and reduced corrosion resistance.Forcibly bending the pipe beyond the radius of curvature, resulting in wall thickness reduction (such as Φ50mm steel pipe minimum bending radius should be ≥80mm).

3. Lack of Maintenance: Small Problems Dragged Into Big Failures

  • Lesson: A power plant neglected to clean the pipeline, and the scaling on the inner wall led to a 50% reduction in flow rate, which eventually led to a pipe burst and shutdown.

  • Correct practice:

Regularly rinse the pipes with a neutral detergent cycle to avoid hard particles scratching the inner wall.We provide pipe cleaners and 5-year warranty service to reduce maintenance costs.

Ⅲ.How to quickly distinguish the quality of stainless steel tube?

1. A look at the material report

High-quality pipe: labeled with specific grades (such as 06Cr19Ni10 corresponds to 304), and the composition is accurate to two decimal places (such as Cr: 18.2%).

Poor quality pipe: only write “304 stainless steel” but no specific data, or nickel content is less than 8%.

2. Second test surface treatment

Simple test:

Rubbing the surface with a copper brush: high-quality tubes have no obvious scratches, and low-quality tubes may reveal the underlying metal (because the polishing layer is too thin).

Drops of nitric acid reagent: 316L steel does not change color within 5 minutes, 201 steel will quickly blacken.

3. Triple-check test certification

Documents that must be available:

Material testing report (including spectral analysis)

Non-destructive testing report (ultrasonic or ray detection)

Hydrostatic test certificate (indicating test pressure and time)

IV. Why choose us?

1. Strict control of raw materials to prevent “substandard products”.

We have signed direct purchasing agreements with large steel mills, and conduct 3 times sampling inspection on the composition of each batch of raw materials before they are put into storage.

2. Leading technology, precision far exceeds the national standard.

Cold-drawn tube wall thickness error ≤ 0.05mm (national standard allows ± 0.1mm), suitable for precision instruments.

3. The whole process of inspection, the problem pipe does not leave the factory.

We have invested 8 million RMB to introduce Zeiss spectrometer and Panasonic ultrasonic equipment, which can increase the inspection efficiency by 70%, and strictly follow the ITP process of quality inspection.

4. Worry-free after-sales, full technical support.

Provide free selection guidance, installation training, and commitment to 72 hours to respond to after-sales issues.

Ⅴ.Conclusion

Stainless steel seamless pipe quality problems are often hidden in the material and process details. As a buyer, it is important to understand the common risk points and choose reliable suppliers in order to avoid economic losses and safety accidents. We have been deeply cultivating the industry for 20 years, from raw materials to finished products at all levels, using data to prove the quality, and using services to win the trust. Choosing us is choosing a long-term safety guarantee.
