What is the classification and production process of seamless stainless steel pipe quality?

Publish Time: 2025-03-19     Origin: Site

--In the petrochemical, food and pharmaceutical, machinery and equipment industries, seamless stainless steel pipe has become a key material because of its high strength and corrosion resistance. However, there are significant price differences between different qualities of seamless stainless steel tubes in the market, and purchasers often fall into selection confusion because they do not understand the quality classification and process differences. In this article, we will use plain language to analyze the quality level of seamless stainless steel pipe, production process and its impact on the price, to help you accurately match your needs and choose cost-effective products.

I. Core dimensions of quality classification

   1. Material grade

The “genes” of stainless steel pipe determine its basic performance. The common material grade directly affects the price and use:

  •  304 stainless steel (entry level): containing 18% chromium, 8% nickel, suitable for general rust environment (such as food equipment, furniture), the price is lower.

  •  316/316L stainless steel (middle and high end): add 2-3% molybdenum, chlorine corrosion resistance increased by more than 30%, suitable for seawater treatment, chemical pipelines, the price is 15-25% higher than 304.

  • Duplex steel (such as 2205) (high-end): higher chromium-nickel content, strength is 2 times that of ordinary steel, used in deep-sea oil fields, high pressure equipment, the price is 2-3 times that of 304.

Ps:The same size of the pipe, 316L material per ton is more expensive than 304 5000-8000 yuan, but the service life can be extended by 3-5 years

    2. Production process

The fineness of the production process directly determines the stability of the pipe's performance. The core process is divided into two categories:

  • Cold drawing process: the heated billet will be drawn through the mold molding, smooth surface, accurate size, suitable for thin-walled precision tubes (such as medical instruments), but low production efficiency and high cost.

  •  Hot rolling process: billets rolled at high temperatures to form, high production efficiency, low cost, but the wall uniformity of the tube is slightly worse, mostly used for thick-walled industrial pipes (such as oil drilling rods).

  • The impact of process differences on the price:

Cold-drawn tubes are 20-30% more expensive than hot-rolled tubes of the same specification, but the precision error can be controlled within ± 0.1mm

   3. Surface finish grade

  • Surface quality affects corrosion resistance and aesthetics, common treatments:

  • Acid washing treatment: use acid to remove surface oxidized skin, low cost, but will leave a slight matte trace (applicable to internal transport piping).

  • Fine polishing treatment: surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.4μm (mirror effect), anti-fouling ability to improve, used in food, semiconductor industry, the price is 10-15% higher than the pickled pipe.

   4. Testing and certification standards

Steel pipe that meets international testing standards is more expensive, but the quality is guaranteed

  • National standard (GB/T 14976): basic testing program (size, water pressure), the price is lower.

  • American Standard (ASTM A312): increase intergranular corrosion, ultrasonic flaw detection, price 8-12%.

EU standard (EN 10216): requires chemical composition deviation ≤ 0.5%, applicable to high-end export equipment, the highest price.

Ⅱ.The core production process analysis

   1. Round steel preparation

  • Raw material selection: high-quality steel pipe using large steel mills continuous casting billet (such as Baosteel, TISCO), uniform composition; low-priced pipe may use recycled scrap steel, impurities.

  • Cutting and heating: cut round steel into billets, heated to 1200 ℃ to make it soften, temperature control deviation ≤ 20 ℃ (too high a temperature is likely to lead to coarse grains).

   2. Perforation molding

  • Hot perforation: the red-hot billet is perforated into a hollow tube by a header machine, and the technical difficulty lies in the wall thickness control. High-end equipment (such as Germany SMS group mill) can ensure that the wall thickness deviation is ≤5%, while the deviation of the old equipment may be more than 10%.

  • Cold rolling molding: cold rolled several times on the tube thinning, the amount of each thinning needs to be accurately calculated, otherwise it is easy to produce internal cracks.

   3. Heat treatment process

  • Solution treatment: Heat the tube to 1050°C and then water cool it quickly to restore the toughness of the material. Poor quality tubes may skip this step, resulting in increased tube brittleness.

  • Stress relief annealing: Remove internal stress after cold working to prevent deformation in use.

   4. Finishing and testing

  • Straightening and cutting: Adjust straightness with six-roller straightening machine, error ≤1mm/m; laser cutting to ensure the end surface is flat.

  • Non-destructive testing:

--Eddy current detection: quickly screen surface cracks, but cannot detect internal defects.

--Ultrasonic flaw detection: can find internal air holes and inclusions with a depth of ≥0.5mm, 100% flaw detection is required for qualified pipes.

Ⅲ.How do differences in quality affect price?

   1. Material cost accounted for 40%

316L stainless steel is 5,000 yuan per ton more expensive than 304, but high-end chemical projects must be used.

Low price trap: some manufacturers use 201 stainless steel (containing manganese without nickel) to pretend to be 304, the price is 30% lower, but it may rust after half a year.

   2. Process complexity determines 30% of the cost

Cold-drawn tubes need to go through 5-7 rolling processes, labor and equipment costs are higher.

Example: A company adopts “hot rolling + cold drawing” composite process, the production cycle is extended by 2 days, but the yield is increased from 85% to 95%.

   3. 20% increase in cost for testing and certification

ASTM standard pipe need to pay more 1000 yuan/ton testing fee, but can avoid the risk of overseas project return.

Ⅳ. The selection of recommendations: match the needs, do not spend the wrong money

   1. Clearly use the environment

  • Ordinary anti-rust: choose 304 pickling pipe, the price per meter 15-20 yuan.

  • Acidic / seawater environment: must use 316L fine polishing tube, 25-35 yuan per meter.

   2. Pressure and precision requirements

  • High-pressure pipe (e.g. above 10MPa): choose hot-rolled thick-walled pipe + 100% ultrasonic flaw detection, wall thickness error ≤5%.

  • Tubes for precision instruments: cold-drawn process + inner wall polishing, inner diameter accuracy ± 0.05mm.
