I.Chemical code for metal surface treatment

1.1.Pickling: The Art of Corrosion and Rebirth

  • Process essence: using 15%-20% nitric acid and 3%-5% hydrofluoric acid mixed solution, at 50-60 ℃ for 3-20 minutes of immersion, to remove 0.01-0.03mm surface layer of metal

--Typical case:

A German manufacturer of automobile exhaust systems used a dual-phase pickling process (HNO3/HF followed by H2SO4) to increase the Cr/Fe ratio on the surface of 2205 dual-phase steel from 0.8 to 2.3, and the passing time of the salt spray test was extended to 3,000 hours.

1.2Passivation: the construction of nanoscale protective shields

  • Process essence: use 20%-50% nitric acid solution, immersion at room temperature for 30-60 minutes, to promote Cr₂O₃ oxide film densification

--Molecular-level reconfiguration:

Treatment State Oxide Film Thickness(nm)

Cr Pontent(wt%)

Pitting Potential(v)

1.3Solution Annealing: Reconstructing Crystal Memory at High Temperatures

  • The essence of the process: the steel pipe is heated to 1040-1150 ℃ insulation after water quenching, so that carbide completely dissolved

The golden curve of temperature-time:

Type  Temperature(℃) Holding time(min/mm)
cooling rate(℃/s)
304 1080 1.5
≧30
316L 1120
2.0
≥35
Duplex steel
1150
2.5 ≥40

Grain change: grain size 5-10μm in cold rolled state → 50-100μm after solid solution, elongation increased by 40%.

II. Three-dimensional value matrix for surface treatment

(i) Quantitative analysis of performance improvement

Index Pickling contribution rate Passivation contribution rate Solution contribution rate
Pitting resistance  +15% +30% +25%
Fatigue life +10% +5% +40%
Welding performance +20% +8% +35%
Surface smoothness +50% +25% -10%

Note: Contribution rate refers to the performance improvement relative to the untreated state ‌

(ii) Economic comparison (316L Φ50×3mm as an example)

III. Reverse analysis of process defects

(i) “Metal sickness” from excessive pickling.

  • Hydrogen embrittlement risk: Hydrogen absorption >5ppm during pickling will result in a 30% reduction in elongation.

  • Grain boundary erosion: Time control error of ±2 minutes will cause 5-10μm deep intergranular grooves.

  • Solution:

Adding 0.5% sodium nitrate as corrosion inhibitor, hydrogen permeation reduced by 72

Adopt PLC automatic control system, time precision ±5 seconds

(ii) The “invisible killer” of passivation films

  • Contact corrosion: contact with carbon steel tools will produce 0.5-1.0mm² of galvanic corrosion spots

  • Fingerprint contamination: human sweat (containing 0.3% NaCl) can trigger pitting corrosion nuclei on contact for 8 hours

  • Protection strategy:

Use nitrogen glove box for operation (O₂ < 50ppm)

Surface coated with a volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI) film layer

(iii) The “temperature trap” of solution treatment

  • σ phase precipitation: stay in the 800-900 ℃ interval > 5 minutes, the generation of hard brittle phase (hardness HV up to 800)

  • Deformation warpage: wall thickness > 10mm steel pipe water quenching temperature stress causes straightness deviation > 2mm / m

  • Control technology:

The use of high-frequency induction heating, heating rate of 200 ℃ / s

Development of gradient water quenching device, cooling uniformity up to 95

V. Industry cutting-edge technology evolution

(ⅰ) Environmentally friendly surface treatment

  • Acid-free electrolytic polishing: using neutral salt solution (e.g. NaNO3), the surface roughness Ra can reach 0.1μm.

  • Laser passivation: High-energy pulsed laser induces surface amorphization, increasing corrosion resistance by 3 times.

(ii) Intelligent process control

  • Machine vision inspection: real-time identification of uneven pickling areas (identification accuracy 0.1mm²)

  • Digital twin system: virtual simulation to predict the processing effect (accuracy > 92%)

Ⅵ.Conclusion

As Dr. Smith, president of the American Society for Materials, said, “The competition for stainless steel in the 21st century is essentially a competition for surface control accuracy.” When an ordinary stainless steel tube through the chemical baptism of pickling, passivation of the molecular reconstruction, solid solution of the crystal nirvana, the increase in its value is like a rough diamond to the metamorphosis of the sparkling jewelry.
